A Couple of Disciples

A Couple of Disciples

James and John were a couple of disciples that the Lord decided to call.  They were brothers as well, just like Peter and Andrew.

Matthew 4:21-22 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

A Couple of Disciples

James and John were a couple of disciples that the Lord decided to call.  They were brothers as well, just like Peter and Andrew.  They were working in the family business right along side dad.  They were not just sitting around doing nothing.  They were working hard.  It is likely this was a godly family.  Even their mother, though misguided maybe, wanted the best in spiritual gifts for her sons when she asked that they sit next to the Lord in heaven.  These two disciples were in the inner circle of close fellowship with the Lord, right alongside Peter.  They did not question the Lord when He came and called him.  They left the ship immediately, without asking any questions. They left their father and family also.  They had likely lived a life that was sold out to the Lord long before he showed up at their father’s ship that fateful day.  They were ready to go no matter the cost.

A Call to Service

Like James and John, we are sometimes called to a life of sacrifice and service.  Being prepared like James and John is critical.  There hearts were the first thing that was prepared.  The Lord knows people’s hearts and he knew James and John.  They were godly men who loved the Lord.  We need to be sold out before the Lord shows up to call us.  The Lord is looking for a willing heart.  Someone who has dedicated their life to the Lord at an early age may wait years and years before the Lord shows up at their father’s ship to receive a call from the Lord.  The Lord does not call parked cars.  He calls men and women who busy doing God’s will for their life.  We need to be faithful doing what God would have us to do while we wait for a call to service.  Are you ready if the Lord showed up at your ship?
