The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Apollos – An Example of a Believer

Acts 18:27-28. And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

Apollos – A Godly Man

Apollos was a godly man. He did a lot to help the early church. He was a bold witness for the Lord. There were some important qualities about Apollos that we should note. Let’s discuss a few of them.

The Leadership of the Holy Ghost

First he followed the leadership of the Holy Ghost. He was “disposed to pass into Achaia.” Sometimes we have to wait on the Holy Ghost to move us in a certain direction. Apollos waited on God’s timing. He also waited on God’s direction. He went to Achaia, not Rome.  We need to let the Lord lead us to certain people or into certain ministries.  You need to be busy, however, if the Lord is going to move you in a certain direction. It is a lot easier to steer a moving car.

Exhortation of the Disciples

Apollos was also an exhorter.  He tried to encourage the disciples. One way to encourage people is to get them to exalt and praise the Lord. You can’t do that by glorifying yourself or your ministry. You need to let the Lord get the glory.  You need to have a good spirit if you are going to exhort others. A good attitude goes a long way. If you are always talking about yourself, you are not going to be a good exhorter.

A Helper in Teaching Salvation by Grace

Apollos was a helper.  He helped people to believe through grace. He got Jews to quit trusting their own works and start trusting in the grace of God. That is not an easy job. People naturally want to trust their own flesh. It is going to take patience teaching people the Bible so that they can believe in salvation by grace.
