The Church That Cares For Your Soul
Come Unto Me

Come Unto Me

Matthew 11:28 – Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Come Unto Me

Hear the blessed Savior calling the oppressed,
“Oh, ye heavy-laden, come to Me and rest;
Come, no longer tarry, I your load will bear,
Bring Me every burden, bring Me every care.”

Refrain:
Come unto Me, I will give you rest;
Take My yoke upon you, hear Me and be blest;
I am meek and lowly, come and trust My might;
Come, My yoke is easy, and My burden’s light.

Are you disappointed, wand’ring here and there,
Dragging chains of doubt and loaded down with care?
Do unholy feelings struggle in your breast?
Bring your case to Jesus—He will give you rest.

Stumbling on the mountains dark with sin and shame,
Stumbling toward the pit of hell’s consuming flame;
By the pow’rs of sin deluded and oppressed,
Hear the tender Shepherd, “Come to Me and rest.”

Have you by temptation often conquered been,
Has a sense of weakness brought distress within?
Christ will sanctify you, if you’ll claim His best;
In the Holy Spirit, He will give you rest.

Charles P. Jones – 1908

There is a lot of good preaching in this song.  The human heart is full of struggles in this life.  Life is full of disappoint, wandering, doubt, cares and unholy feelings.  Sin and shame will cause us to lose our way.  The tempter, Satan, will also cause great oppression.

The problem is when we try and beat down those cares ourselves.  Some animals are built to bear burdens like a donkey or a horse. It is natural to them.  The human heart is not very good at it.  That is why Christ needs to bear our loads, bear our burdens.  The problem is we don’t want to come to him and have him yoke us up to his plow.  We would rather be chained to the devil’s plow and try to bear burdens to heavy to be born.  The Pharisees tried to put these kinds of burdens on people. The devil will gladly do it as well.

We need to come to the Lord for rest every moment we can.  You need a breather once in a while and the Lord will give it to you if you jump in his yoke. The Lord’s yoke is kind of like a self-propelled mower.  You just need to get behind it and it drives under it’s own power. We are just along for the ride.  The problem is we have a trust problem.  We think we know better where we should take our life or what is best for us.  We don’t want to trust that whatever comes our way is the Lord’s design and purpose for our life.

Christ said his yoke is easy and his burden is light.  The devil tells us it is hard and heavy being a Christian.  Who are you going to believe?  Why not just trust God with your life.  If your life is full of care, you are probably in the wrong yoke today.
