The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Fads and Fashions

They that borrow the fashions of the Egyptians may get their boils and their blotches.  Certainly such as fear the Lord should go in no apparel but first, such as they are willing to die in; secondly, to appear before the Ancient of Days; thirdly, to stand before the judgement seat in. – Thomas Brooks

1 Timothy 2:9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

Fads and Fashions

The fads and the fashions of Egypt have crept their way into the church of today, unfortunately.  If they had trouble with the fashions of Egypt in Thomas Brooks’ day, we certainly have a problem today.  Modest apparel, for both men and women, boys and girls is what sets the Christian apart from the world.  There has always been immodesty since the fall of man.  We need to clothe ourselves in such a manner that we bring glory and honor to our King.  It mentions a few things in these verses that set the Christian woman apart.

The Woman’s Clothing

First, her clothing has a shamefacedness and sober manner about it.  It is not gaudy, nor does it draw attention to itself.  It is sober, it is practical, it is what brings glory and honor to the King of Kings.  Everything else mentioned in this verse is about bringing fanfare to the body and drawing attention to the body, not the spirit.  The godly woman is not concerned with having the most costly brand of clothes that will draw attention to herself.  It is not that a woman is to be unkept, but if she spend hours and hours fixing her hair, that is too much.  A modest woman covers her body and does not draw attention to it.

The Man’s Clothing

The same is true of a man.  He wants to be clothed so that he looks sober and sensible.  He needs to cover up and look respectable.  A shirt, tie, dress pants, and dress shoes for church should be the norm.  You would not go to do business with the president in sloppy clothes.  Why would you come to church that way?  Make sure you are not controlled by the fads and fashions of this world, but rather, by the Bible and the Lord Jesus Christ.
