Giving the Devil a Blackeye

Job 2:10. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

Job had been through a lot, up to this point, in a relatively short period of time. It is probably more than most of us will experience in a lifetime.  Job was not about to curse God for all the evil that had happened to him.  Satan was allowed to move against Job in some mighty ways.  He moved whole countries (the Sabeans) against Job’s servants and family.  Satan had no mercy on Job.  He wanted to destroy God’s choicest servant.  In all of it, Satan was simply God’s pawn in a greater purpose of life.

As Christians, we should be content with what God gives us in life, whether it be good or evil.  Even though Satan thought he was doing what he wanted to do, God was using him for a greater purpose in Job’s life.  God wanted to help cure Job of a pride problem.  Job thought everything revolved around him and his righteousness.  In reality, God needed to knock Job down a notch and show him who really created everything and who was in charge of this universe.

I think at times we forget who calls the shots in our lives as Christians.  We don’t like what happens to us and we get to thinking we are bigger than God.  We start to say to God, “why me?”  At least Job did not ask that question when his wife grilled him.  The Lord is in charge of your life and he does everything with a purpose, just like he did with Job’s life.  He may even move the devil against you at times, to accomplish His will for your life.   We should be content with whatever He brings our way.  It is only for our good. Like Job, we can bring glory to God by accepting good or evil at the hand of the Lord. That is one way to give the devil a black eye.
