The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Marrying Up

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

Marrying Up

The blue bloods and upper class practice a thing called “marrying up.”  They seek good marriages for their children in order to improve the social status of their family and potential future wealth. They did not want their children to marry “common folk.”  Though the practice of marrying up is totally for the wrong reason according to the Bible, we as Christians should seek godly mates for our daughters and sons.  We want them to “marry up” in the spiritual sense.  The Bible says we should not be unequally yoked together with the unbelievers.  You should seek someone who is an equal in a spiritual sense as a future mate.  You do not want someone who is going to draw you down.  In the same sense you should try to increase your spiritual value or wealth to a future mate by acquiring godly character and integrity.

Improving Your Spiritual Worth

If you want a godly mate, you had better be godly yourself.  A godly young man is going to be someone who is not double minded, is going to be unselfish and willing to give himself to his future wife just like Christ did to the church, and he is going to be willing to put away childish things and be willing to set up housekeeping.  A godly  young woman is going to virtuous, she is going to be meek and quiet, she is going to be a hard worker whose candle does not go out a night, she will take care of her vessel but not adorn it too much, she will be modest and shame-faced, she will love children and desire them, and she will build up her brothers and father and not be critical of men.  How are you improving your spiritual worth as a young person?  Are you preparing yourself to “marry up” and be equally yoked together with a godly spouse?  You need good fellowship with righteousness and light.  A spiritually valuable spouse is the best way to have a life-long friend who can help you through life and live godly in Christ Jesus.  In the same sense a spiritually depraved spouse will do nothing but drag you down and quit living for God.  Make your decisions wisely young people.
