More Brutish Than Any Man

More Brutish Than Any Man

Like Agur, we can be more brutish than any man when we lack contentment due to our pride. We set way to high of value of ourself and our worth.

Proverbs 30:2 Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.

Discontentment arising from disrespect savers too much of pride.  A humble Christian has a lower opinion of himself than others can have of him.  He who is taken up about the thoughts of his sins and how he has provoked God cries out as Agur, “I am more brutish than any man” (Proverbs 30:2), and therefore is contented though he is set among the dogs of the flock.  Though he is low in the thoughts of others, yet he is thankful that he is not laid in the lowest hell.  A proud man sets a high value upon himself, and is angry with others because they will not come up to his price.  Take heed of pride.  Oh, had others a window to look into your breast, or did your heart stand where your face does, you would wonder that you have as much respect as you do!

The Art of Divine Contentment – Thomas Watson

More Brutish Than Any Man

Like Agur, we can be more brutish than any man when we lack contentment due to our pride.  We set way to high of value of ourself and our worth.  When that happens, one starts to complain about all kinds of things.  Nothing pleases the brutish man.

BRU’TISH, a. Insensible; stupid; as brutish men.  Unfeeling; savage; ferocious; brutal.  Gross; carnal; bestial.  Ignorant; uncivilized; untaught. – Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

Becoming Insensible

We become insensible and unfeeling when our pride forces us to think only of ourselves.  When we stop to see the world around us and souls dying and going to hell, we are way to focused on our own problems.  It is a tactic that the devil uses.  He gets us so focused on ourselves that we become of little use to the Lord in the battle for what is right.  Many a battle has been lost by some woman wooing a general or soldier in order to delay his advance against the enemy.  The devil, through our pride, delays our advance in the battle of the Lord.

Anger With Others

When you start to get angry with others and their irritations in your life, you are valuing your comfort and well being too high.  You feel that they are not worth your time or effort.  However, when someone that is above your stature needs help, you are more than willing to help because you feel they are worth it.  You have respect of persons.  You value yourself and your worth in the ministry of the Lord way too high.  You are more brutish than any man.  Humble yourself under the mighty hand of God and let Him exalt you in due time.  It may not happen this side of heaven.
