The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Temptations – Pirates of the Soul

Temptations are pirates of the soul.

Pirates only attack ships loaded down with riches.  The devil only attacks the godly who are rich in Christ Jesus.

Temptations are rather hopeful evidences that thy estate is good, that thou art dear to God, and that it shall go well with thee forever, than otherwise. God had but one Son without corruption, Heb. 2:17-18, but he had none without temptation. Pirates make the fiercest assaults upon those vessels that are most richly laden; so doth Satan upon those souls that are most richly laden with such treasures of grace, with the riches of glory. Pirates let empty vessels pass and repass without assaulting them; so doth Satan allows souls that are empty of God, of Christ, of the Spirit, of grace, pass and repass without tempting or assaulting of them.

Christ – Without Sin Thou Tempted

Hebrews 2:17-18 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

KJV 1611 Bible

Take Comfort In Temptations

You should take comfort in temptations.  It shows that you are God’s child.  If you wanted assurance of your salvation, temptations will provide it.  The devil never bothered you when you were lost.  In the midst temptations, the Bible says the Lord is able to succour you.

SUC’COR, v.t. [L. succurro; sub and curro, to run.]

Literally, to run to, or run to support; hence, to help or relieve when in difficulty, want or distress; to assist and deliver from suffering; as, to succor a besieged city; to succor prisoners.

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary

If you want the Lord’s strength, you have to go through trials and temptations.  Paul said when he had a thorn in the flesh, he got grace and was strengthened.  He thought there was more glory in the power of Christ resting on him in trials than taking a short trip to heaven as part of a school field trip!

Pirates Hit Hard and Quick

When pirates attack a ship, they come on hard and quick.  If they can use the element of surprise in a heavy fog, they will.  They also have no mercy and will slash and kill at any expense.  They are very greedy and always want more.  So it is with the devil.  He will always be planning a new attack against God’s choicest saints.  The devil wants to take our most precious possessions in Christ.  That would be things like grace, mercy, peace, joy, love, and anything else he can find.  He will plunder the soul of all that is godly.  Sometimes he uses his children in the form of human flesh also.  They try to get us to give them our precious possessions when we get frustrated and lose our cool.

You should be on guard and not let him steal things.  You need to keep an eye out in the fog for the enemy of your soul.  As soon as you see his ship, you need to resist his attack with the Word of God.  You need to load and fire the cannons of grace and give him a broad side.  He will soon flee when he figures out he is no match for the grace of God.

So try and let temptations work together for good in your life.  Let the Lord give you some fire support.  He is there when you need him.
