Practical Preaching

Practical Preaching

Practical preaching is what is really needed.  If the words a preacher says do not do you some good and help you to walk more uprightly and closer to God, what is the use?

Micah 2:7 O thou that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the Lord straitened? are these his doings? do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?

Practical Preaching

Practical preaching is what is really needed.  If the words a preacher says do not do you some good and help you to walk more uprightly and closer to God, what is the use?  There is a movement that focuses on making questions about doctrine, endless genealogies and other useless things in regard to Christianity.  Unless the Word of God helps you to walk more uprightly, what good is it?  The Puritans were practical preachers.  They wrote practical books.  Their Christianity was practical.  Their lives were practical.  If preaching does not lay a demand at your hearts door and force you to a decision, it is not real Bible preaching.  It is just a tapioca sermonette.  You and I need to be constantly growing as Christians.  The only way that is going to happen is with good preaching.

Being Straightened by God’s Word

We need to be straightened out.  If God’s words do not do you some good, what use are they.  You need to read good books regularly as well that challenge you to live a godly and holy life.  If all you read is material that builds up your intellect, you are just going to become puffed up and proud.  God’s Spirit is not straightened or brought into line with our wants and desires.  We need to be straightened by God’s Spirit.  We need to change and not God.  The problem is many come to the Word of God with a worldly notion or idea and then try to find a verse to pull out of context to line up with that notion.  That is private interpretation of the scripture.  Are you straightened in God’s Word?  Or are you a proud, puffed up Christian, always trying to just find another great doctrine to talk about that will not help anyone in the slightest?
