Pride and Lies Go Hand in Hand

Proverbs 17:4 – A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

John 8:44 – Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Pride and lies go hand in hand.  Often people lie to cover up for something they did.  They also lie when they want to boast of some great deed they have done.  The devil is the father of lies.  When the devil lies, he is talking about his own kind.  The devil tries to get the child of God to believe lies about the Bible, about God hating them, about the brethren or about anything that would destroy God’s work.  Richard Baxter talks about pride pushing men to lie.

It (pride) makes men liars: most of the lies that are told in the world, are to avoid some disgrace and shame, or to get men to think highly of them. When a sin is committed against God or your superiors, instead of humble confession, pride would cover it with a lie.

Let’s discuss a few things about lying.

  1. A Liar Listens to Other Liars – Liars are attracted to other liars according to Proverbs 17.  Any one who has a wicked heart that is filled with sin will listen to, and often believe a lie.  Not because they really believe they are telling the truth.  It is because they want the wickedness.  A liar will give ear or listen to a wicked tongue because he likes listening to wickedness.  You are not going to con a con but the con will go along with a lie if it helps their agenda.
  2. A Liar’s Father is the Devil – Satan is the originator of all lies.  There are three characteristics of the devil that go hand in hand.  They are pride, lying and murder.  People often lie because of pride.  They want to boast or they want to cover up something. When you lie to make yourself look better than you really are, you are fulfilling the devil’s mission in your life.  When lying is not enough to cover up a sin, eventually murder is the next step.  The saying is “dead men don’t talk.”  Most crime involves a lot of lies to make it happen.  The devil does not abide or live in the truth.  He lives in a constant field of lies.  Liars can not tell just one lie.  They need to tell a bunch to cover their sin.
  3. A Liar Lies to Cover Sin – A lie is often used to cover another sin.  No one wants to admit when they have done wrong.  Most people will not even be honest with God when confessing sin, let alone their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.  It takes courage to tell the truth when you are in trouble.  We either won’t say anything at all or we will add to a story to make ourselves look better.

Christians should not lie.  When you do, you are showing that you have the same characteristic as the devil.  If you are a habitual liar, you probably don’t even realize you are doing it.  When someone boasts a lot, lying is not far behind.  Humble Christians are what the world needs to see.  It will make you stand out different than the children of the devil in a hurry.  Try and stay humble and lying will not be in your speech.
