Rain – God’s Backup Irrigation System

Genesis 2:5  And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

The first mention of rain in the Bible is here in Genesis 2:5.  It is referring to the fact that before the fall of man, there was no rain on the earth.  The Lord had a jump on the modern sprinkler system when he had a self watering earth whereby a mist went up from the ground.  The ground did not even need tilling.  God was doing just fine without man.  It was not until the fall that tilling and weeds came into being.  After the flood came rain.  To get what God did in the garden today would take a team of farmers and horticulturist.  The rain today is really a backup irrigation system that the Lord developed after the fall.  It should be a reminder to us that things will be better one day.

We need to remember that as beautiful as this world is today in its natural state, it is still just a fraction of what it once was.  It is going back to that state one day.  The same is true of the Christian.  This is not how God created man.  Our bodies are falling apart from the moment we are born.  The effects of sin begin immediately.  Cancer and clogged arteries are slowly forming in all of us.  But one day we will be restored back to that Garden of Eden.  We will get bodies like unto Jesus Christ’s glorious body.  We will be in a perfect environment in heaven or on a modified earth during the millennium.

When you put too much emphasis on this life, you have your priorities wrong.  This is not the life you should be living for.  It should be the next.  Things are not messed up in the next.  You need to invest in eternity where there is no rust or moth destroying everything you have.  Getting your perspective right is important.  The rain today is only necessary because we live in a fallen world.  It is a reminder that we have a backup irrigation system the Lord gave us after the fall.  One day things will be better.
