Rules About Contentment

Thomas Watson in his book titled The Art of Divine Contentment discusses in Chapter 14 about fifteen rules about contentment.  It is important for a Christian to learn contentment as the Apostle Paul describes here.  Without it, we will be majorly out of sorts with the world and the Lord.  The first rule has of contentment is with regards to advancing our faith.

Rule 1. Advance Faith

All our disquiet issues immediately from unbelief.  It is this that raises the storm of discontent in the heart.  Oh, set faith to work!  It is the property of faith to silence our doubts, to scatter our fears, to still the heart when the passions are up.  Faith works the heart to a sweet, serene composure. … Faith shows the soul that whatever it’s trials are, yet it is from the hand of a Father.  … Faith sucks the honey of contentment out of the hive of the promise.  … Would you lead contented lives?  Live up to the height of your faith.

Advancing Our Faith

We need to trust the Lord when we are going through trials.  You need to add to your faith virtue.  Faith will calm your doubts as you put it into action.  You need to learn to trust the Lord as you go through things in the Christian life.  Virtue is a moral goodness that is brought about by trusting in God’s promises.  The more we trust that God has our best interest at heart, the more we are content.  This produces a sweet contentedness as we go throughout the day.  We need to find promises in the Word of God and then believe them.  Those promises will get us off of looking at our circumstances and looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.  Faith will calm the fears and doubts that arise in our heart throughout the day.  It is when we quit trusting God that we become discontent with our lot in life.  We begin to complain about the things or people that God has given us.  We need to trust the providence of God and that who and what he gives us is enough.  Are you going to live up to the faith that God has given you.  Think on the good things you have today like being saved and having a home in heaven.
