The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Setting Your Heart on the Right Things

Psalms 78:7-8. That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments: And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.

Setting Your Heart on the Right Things

What you set your heart on is important as a Christian.  If it is set on the wrong things, you will not grow and maintain a walk with God.  Many a king in the Old Testament started out good, however, they did not finish up right because their heart was not set aright.  There are some important things we must do as Christians if we are going to keep our hearts set right.

Setting Your Heart on God

First, we need to set our heart on God.  If you have your heart set on a lot of other things, they will eventually start to crowd God out of your life.  Most people don’t backslide in one full sweep.  They do it little by little.  More and more things start to compete with God.  It likely begins with their devotional life, starting to decline or never growing to where it should be.  It then works into the friends they keep and the activities they do, and soon creeps into their church attendance.  Next thing you know, they have no care for the things of God.

Not Forgetting the Works of God

Secondly, we need to not forget the works of God.  When you forget the victories that God has wrought in your life and all you do is look at the bad, you will soon become discontent with God.  Contentedness is a very important part of the Christian life.  When you are discontented, you will soon start to blame God for problems in your life, rather than look at the problems as a blessing to help you grow.  Count your blessings on a regular basis.  It will help keep your heart set right.

Keeping God’s Commandments

Thirdly, we need to keep God’s commandments.  Living a holy life will help keep your heart set on God.  The more you think like God and act like your new nature, the more your heart will be set to live for God.  Living a loose, sloppy, Christian life is not good.  Being sin conscious and living holy will help you.  It is important that we set our heart right so that we don’t end up in rebellion against God.

  1. Another good one, I often more times then I like to admit, tend to forget about all the serious victories God had brought to me, because of the what seems to be big problems are only irritating minor ones in the long run.
