The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Sojourners, Strangers and Pilgrims

1 Chronicles 29:15 – For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.

Hebrews 11:13 – These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

1 Peter 2:11 – Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

As Christians, we are sojourners, strangers and pilgrims in this world.  We just don’t fit in, we do not belong here.  That is because our citizenship is not in this world.  We are citizens of another country with a different king.  Our king is Jesus Christ.  We answer to the beat of a different drum.

Vance Havner told a story of a young man who was marching with a band in a parade.  He was the only one who was not in step with the rest of the band.  Come to find out he had a transistor radio that was tuned to a station nearly a thousand miles away.  He was marching to a different tune.  That is us as Christians.  We are out of step with this world.  We are getting our orders from a different King.

We have to remember we are only here temporarily.  This life is only for 70, 80, 90 years and then it is all over.  We may live to an old age and then we may not.  The most important thing you could spend your life doing is living for the Lord Jesus Christ.  A sojourner and a pilgrim knows he is just living here temporarily.  He is more concerned about where he is headed than where he is.  This world should feel awkward to you.  You should not fit in.  Are you a pilgrim to this world or are you like Lot?  He just kind of blended into Sodom and felt at home there.  I hope you don’t.
