The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Taking Care of Yourself Spiritually

Luke 21:34  And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

I think sometimes the cares of this life can overtake us.  The Lord warns to take heed to ourselves.  If you don’t take heed or watch over your spiritual condition, your heart can become overwhelmed. It is so important for the Christian to keep his perspective right in life.  If you start to look around you at your circumstances too much,  you will soon be overcharged with surfeiting (oppressing the system by excessive eating – Webster’s 1828) and drunkeness.  Stress eating is a Christian’s way of dealing with the cares of this world.  It is a lot more acceptable than going down to the bar, but it is not a good thing.

You need to get ahold of yourself spiritually or you will soon be like the rest of the world, unable to cope with the stress of life.  Just like you need to take care of your body by proper eating, exercise, and rest; you need to do the same thing for your spiritual life.  It is so important that as we minister to the Lord and “do things for him”, that we take heed to our own spiritual condition.

Dr. Havner used to tell a story of a farmer.  He would say, “How can I lay in bed when the farmer is out working early in the morning and I am so far behind on my sanctification.”  The point of the story is that we all need to take heed to ourselves.  We need to keep our relationship with the Lord right or the rest of our life will not matter.  Your spiritual health is vitally important as a Christian.  Take heed to yourself today and work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.  It is the best remedy to overcome the cares of the world and the depression it brings.
