The Church That Cares For Your Soul

The Men of the World

Psalms 17:14-15. From men which are thy hand, O Lord, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.  As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

The “men of the world” only have satisfaction in the things of this life.  They may have a portion of good things in this life; like houses, lands, cars, wealth, and a family; but what they don’t have is a walk with God.  David was satisfied with just seeing God’s righteousness.  The men of the world are referred to as God’s hand.  When I think of a hand, I think of something we use to do work and to give to others.  God uses the men of the world to give to his people through His hand.  The hand is a means of provision.  The men of the world seek only God’s provision.

As God’s people, we should not be satisfied with the same thing as the men of the world.  What we should be satisfied with is the likeness of the Lord.  We should want to seek God’s face, not His hand.  The face contains the eyes, ears, nose and mouth.  It tells the most about a person.  It reveals what someone’s mood is and what they are thinking.   It tells all.  When we seek God’s face, we show we are more concerned with knowing about God than getting from God.  We enjoy just being in His presence.

We seek God’s face each day as we come to His word.  We look into his face as we read his Word and meditate on it.  At the same time, as we look into God’s face through his Word, we reveal our face as well.  The Word of God is likened to a mirror.  As we look into the mirror of His word, we see our sin and our faults.  We see where we need to make improvements.  We mediate and think about how we can do better.  As we do this, the image of self becomes less and less visible and we see, more and more, the image of Jesus.  We now can see the face of Jesus in our life.  Are you seeking the face of Jesus in His Word like David?  Do you want God’s likeness to be revealed in your life?  I certainly hope so.
