The Church That Cares For Your Soul

When the Ark Becomes a Coffee Table

1 Chronicles 13:14. And the ark of God remained with the family of Obededom in his house three months. And the Lord blessed the house of Obededom, and all that he had.

Vance Havner referred to this passage in some of his messages.  He was discussing about when the holy things of God become commonplace in our lives.  After the situation where David disobeyed the Lord and tried to use man’s ways to transport the Ark of God, Uzza was struck dead.  Using man’s ways, rather than God’s ways, usually ends in death.  After that happened, the Ark was taken down to Obededom’s house and sat there for three months.  It likely became a common piece of furniture, like a coffee table.  When the holy is made common in our life, we soon begin to not take the things of God as seriously as we should.

We need to consecrate our lives to the Lord.  That means they are set apart from common, everyday use.  Our lives as a Christian should not be used for whatever we feel like.  The Ark belonged in the tabernacle, not Obededom’s house.  The Ark did not belong to just Obededom, it belonged to all the children of Israel.  It needed to be set aside for all to partake.  Obededom was certainly blessed by the Ark.  It would have been better if all could have shared the blessing.

Our lives are not our own.  They are set apart and not to be common, everyday furniture, soon to be forgotten.  Is your life set apart?  Is it holy unto the Lord?  Do you let it become common like the Philistines all around you?  We hope not.  Don’t let the Ark of a godly life become a common piece of furniture.  You have a higher calling in the tabernacle where you are to fellowship with God.
