The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Widowed to the Law – Remarried to Christ

Romans 7:4 – Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

What would a husband say, if his wife, instead of expressing her love to him, and delight in him, should day and night do nothing but weep and cry to think of her former husband that is dead? The law, as a covenant, and Christ, are compared to two husbands: ‘Ye are become dead to the law by the body of Christ, that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead,’ Rom. 7:4 . Now thy sorrow for the defect of thy own righteousness, when it hinders thy rejoicing in Christ, is but a whining after thy other husband, and this Christ cannot take but unkindly—that thou art not well pleased to lie in the bosom of Christ, and have thy happiness from him as with your old husband the law.

William Gurnall – The Christian in Complete Armour

When I got saved, my first husband, the law died.  I was working my way to heaven for nearly 20 years and it was not working.  But now that my former husband is dead, I am remarried to Jesus Christ.  Why would I ever want to yearn for my old husband?   My former husband was a task master and not very kind at all.  He was very unkind at times and brought no joy to our marriage but rather stern judgement.  Why would I cry or weep for him?  Why would I be sorry to give up my own righteousness?

When we try to go back to our beggarly ways and try to earn God’s favor with our own righteousness after we are saved, we hinder our relationship with our new husband, Jesus Christ.  When we are like the children of Israel after they left Egypt and want to go back to the world, it hinders our relationship with our new husband.  No husband wants to hear his wife talk about her old boyfriends or first husband.  No husband wants his wife hanging around old boyfriends or talking to them.  So why would a Christian want to go back to the world and their old husband the law.  The law truly is a ball and chain. You need to be divorced or dead to the old life.

Instead, you need to rejoice with your new husband and forget about the old battle-axe of the law and the world.  You are under grace now.  You have a sweet, loving, kind, compassionate, beautiful husband in Jesus Christ.  You need to “forget those things which are behind”  Philippians 3:13b.  Christ loves you and cares for you.  He will pay all your expenses unlike your first husband.  He purchased you with a very high dowry of his own blood.  If he was willing to pay that much just to marry you, then why should ever question his love?  Rejoice and be confident in your new husband, Jesus Christ.
