Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God. Deut 7:9
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. Prov 17:17
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God. James 2:23
God is a friend that will never leave us or forsake us. Abraham was called the friend of God. What kind of a friend have you been to God. He has certainly been a good friend to you. Here are a few things about God’s friendship from Thomas Watson.
- God is a best friend. – The Lord is the best friend to have. He needs to be number one in your life. He should not play second fiddle. He never leaves you when things get bad, why would you leave him? The question is what kind of friend are you to God and others? Are you someone people can count on like you count on God? Are you always there when someone is in trouble? How about when someone gets impatient or cross with you, are you understanding and patient like the Lord? Are you a best friend to God?
- God is a faithful friend. – God is always faithful. He is there through thick and thin. He is more concerned about us than we are. He will never leave us or forsake us. We can know he is faithful because we have the promises from his Word. Are you a faithful friend? Do you love others even when someone is unlovable? How about your spouse? You said for richer or poorer, in sickness and health at the altar. That means you need to stick by them just like God sticks by you. Are you a faithful friend to God like he is to you? We show our faithfulness to God by keeping his commandments.
- God is an immutable friend. – God never changes on us. He is consistent in his love. The Bible says he is the same yesterday, today and forever. The Lord will always be there for us. We know his Word never changes, his promises are the same. Are you a consistent friend to God or are you an up and down Christian? Do you have the same standards you had 5, 10, 20 years ago? You need to have character and stay consistent.
Make sure you are as good of a friend to God as he has been to you.
