Psalms 107:17-19 – Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat; and they draw near unto the gates of death. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saveth them out of their distresses.
A fool is a pretty common term in the Word of God. The Webster’s 1828 has a few definitions that shed some light on the subject.
- One who acts contrary to sound wisdom in his moral deportment.
- One who follows his own inclinations.
- One who prefers trifling and temporary pleasures to the service of God and eternal happiness.
- A weak christian.
- A godly person who has much remaining sin and unbelief.
- One who counterfeits folly.
Fools do not believe in God because they fail to recognize God and His Word like the atheist. You also have the unsaved church going fool who may acknowledge God and his Word but it will not affect their decisions. As a result, gross iniquity and sin often abound in their lives. When the natural effects of their sin begin to cause trouble, they blame the same God they failed to recognize. The atheist and the church goer end up in about the same situation both stemming from a lack of belief in the Word of God. Most of America lets the television/radio be their final authority in all matters of faith and practice rather than the Word of God. Just try and preach the Word of God and let it cross Oprah or Dr. Phil and see what happens.
We as Christians have played the fool at one time or another. We follow our own inclinations and let the baubles of this world allure us. We sacrifice the eternal on the altar of the temporary. We counterfeit folly that produces no true, lasting joy. We pretend we are happy with the things of the world but our mouth ends up being filled with gravel. In the end, folly produces death and destruction in our lives. Like the unsaved church goer, we blame God for the effects of our sin.
In the end, we have a merciful God who knows our frame. If you truly humble ourselves and cry unto him in our trouble, He will save you out of your self-inflicted distress. He will not just save you out of the little holes you dig for yourself but even the nuclear sizes craters. Our God is truly a wonderful God. Even when everyone else would give up on us, he keeps digging us out. That is why we need to have compassion on other fools when they truly repent. We have all been there at one time or another. Praise the Lord for good preaching, godly counsel and the Word of God that tries to keep us from being fools more than we already are at times.
