Deut. 15:10 – The Lord thy God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.
Luke 10:41-42 – And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
I think I find most help in trying to look on all interruptions and hindrances to work that one has planned out for oneself as discipline, trials sent by God to help one against getting selfish over one’s work. Then one can feel that perhaps one’s true work–one’s work for God–consists in doing some trifling haphazard thing that has been thrown into one’s day. It is not waste of time, as one is tempted to think, it is the most important part of the work of the day,–the part one can best offer to God. After such a hindrance, do not rush after the planned work; trust that the time to finish it will be given sometime, and keep a quiet heart about it. ANNIE KEARY.
Interruptions and hinderances to our daily tasks often get us upset. Martha was busy cleaning house and cooking dinner when the Lord came by. She got frustrated with the interruption of the Lord wanting worship. Mary was willing to give him. It hindered her agenda and plans. She had things that needed to get done. There was bread to bake. A kitchen to clean. But what she needed was more needful or important. She needed to worship the Lord.
We become impatient quickly. We can’t go as fast as we would like. It takes longer to get things done than planned. But God has a purpose in it all. We value our time to the point of getting frustrated when others waste it. We think our time is too valuable to spend it on some because what we have to do is more important in our minds. But the reality is all our works are important to God, especially works that produce a sanctification or cleansing of all that is bad in us.
Pride is one of the main things that needs to be cleansed or purged from us by the triflings of life. Our spouse asks us to do something right at the wrong time. Someone calls and interrupts us and asks a seemingly trival question or tells something we have no interest in. We begin to think what is the use. But the Lord is producing fruit in our lives. Often it also blesses others as they see us takes things patiently. A sweet, calming spirit is a refreshing to others as we go through the day.
We need to makes plans. We need to have a purpose and schedule. At the same time we need to let the Lord bring interruptions and use us any way he sees fit to help another. Our true work is not getting our to do list done. Our true work is our work for God. That is the most important thing we can accomplish today. Can God interrupt your day and your life at anytime and you not get upset? Can you still have the joy of the Lord when distractions and hinderances come your way? Or are you a Martha who is so attached to her agenda and what she thinks needs to get done. Do you forget to take time to spend time at the feet of Jesus? It truly is more needful to take time with the Lord and let him interrupt your life so you can grow and learn.
