The Church That Cares For Your Soul
An Holy Convocation

An Holy Convocation

The children of Israel had an holy convocation every Saturday and on every feast day.

Leviticus 23:3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your dwellings.

Holy – Properly, whole, entire or perfect, in a moral sense.  Hallowed; consecrated or set apart to a sacred use, or to the service or worship of God.

Convocation – The act of calling or assembling by summons.   An assembly.

An Holy Convocation

The children of Israel had an holy convocation every Saturday and on every feast day.  So what is an holy convocation according to the dictionary?  According to the Webster’s 1828 it would be a consecrated or set apart for sacred use assembly of God’s people.  That sounds a lot like a church service. So the children of Israel did not just sit around in their tents and read the Saturday afternoon edition of the Jerusalem Post.  They had a church service.

They may not have read the Bible yet (since they did not have it) but surely someone preached or taught something.  Moses had to give them these commandments somehow.  This is also referred to in the New Testament as the “church in the wilderness” (Acts 7:38).  Our church services should be holy convocations as well.  We need to set aside each Sunday as a day unto the Lord.  We worship on Sunday now because that is the day the Lord rose from the dead.  Paul even took up offerings on Sunday.  We need to rest from the world just like the Jews did as well.  Sunday needs to be a special day for Christians to come apart from world just like God did for the Jews.

No Work Therein

God intended the Jews to not do any work on the Sabbath.  The Sabbath was given to the Jews for a sign to show that they were different than any other nation.  We do not keep the Sabbath any more as New Testament Christians because the sign gifts went away when they ceased with the death of the apostles (I Cor. 13:8).  It went away with all of the other signs given to the Jew.  We are Greeks and the Greek seeks after the wisdom of God’s Word (I Cor. 1:22), not signs like God gave to the Jew.
However, the principal of setting aside a day for the Lord is still good.  We have Sunday to do that.  In addition, the principal of no work on Sunday is good.  God wants his people to rest on Sunday and set aside one day a week for him.  It is just the no fire, no cooking, no anything that is difficult for the Christian.  However, we need to set aside Sunday for the Lord and make it holy.  That is pretty hard if you are working all the time.  Let’s try and make Sunday an holy convocation to the Lord and make a difference in this world.  Spend time with family in between some good holy convocations at church.  An don’t forget your Baptist nap in the afternoon.
