Mark 13:34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
The Porter
The porter has a special calling to watch for the Lord’s return. The word “watch” is used several times in this passage. When the Lord left for glory at his first coming, he left the church in charge of his house and work. We are responsible for seeing that the gospel gets to where it needs to go. Missions is so important as we watch for his coming. This passage shows that being busy about taking care of the house of God and the work of God is how we are to watch for his coming. The porter is in charge of the gate or door of the house. If you are in charge of the door, you control who comes in and who goes out. I would think of a porter like a modern day security guard who controls entrance to the buliding. The porter in the spiritual sense is us who give the gospel to a lost and dying world. We show people to “the door”, Jesus Christ. If you are not trying to win souls, you are not be a good porter of the kingdom.
Commanded to Win Souls
We are commanded to win souls and tell people about the gospel. The Lord commanded the porter to watch for his coming. The Lord took a far journey to heaven 2000 years ago. We have been stewards of his house for a long time. There are nearly 7.5 billion people in the world today that the Lord has given us charge. Even if we sent out 100,000 missionaries, it would just be a drop in the ocean. That is 75,000 people per missionary. We are no where near 100,000 Bible believing missionaries. We got a long way to go. We really need about 10 million missionaries to be reasonable. The porter needs to watch the door of the kingdom and try and see souls saved. He that winneth souls is wise.
