Remember that these people, as strangers and pilgrims do, are not ashamed to ask the way of those they meet with to Zion, or the heavenly country; whereby they confess their ignorance, as became them, and their desire to know the way to life: yea, thereby they declare that there is nothing in this world, under the sun, or this side heaven, that can satisfy the longings, the desire, and cravings of a broken and a contrite spirit. – The Acceptable Sacrifice by John Bunyan
Psalms 34:18 The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
The Lord is Nigh
The Lord is nigh or close by those that have a broken and contrite spirit. When the heart is broken, the things of this world grow strangely dim very quickly. The contrite are more concerned about the things of God and like to talk about them regularly. They are humble and want to learn more about their Lord. There are not many people who fall into this category. The broken and contrite desire is to know more about heaven and less about this world. The broken and contrite learn there is nothing In this world worth longing for.
The Saving of Such
The Lord saves those who are humble, broken and seeking Him. His deliverance is close by to those who are broken and contrite. People want deliverance from problems without ever letting the Lord deal with them and break them. God needs to break us first. Then he can save us and grow us. The cross always comes before the crown. When you humble yourself and let God know you don’t have it all figured out, then God can move in and save you. The cravings and desires of the broken is just to know God better. They want the spiritual things first and foremost. The Lord is nigh or close by those who love HIm with all their heart.
