The Church That Cares For Your Soul

Overcoming Depression in the Life of the Christian

Psalms 42:11. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

Sometimes we get cast down and depressed as Christians.  The disquiet comes from within, or this flesh.  There were many Christians who suffered from all kinds of depression, including Martin Luther and others.  It is not uncommon for God’s people to get cast down.  The problem is when they stay like that and don’t fight it tooth and nail.  The Bible remedy for depression is hope in God.  We need to just keep coming to God and put our faith and trust in Him.  That is not always going to fix everything in an instant.  It may take a lot of faith and just coming back to God, again and again, in order to overcome depression.

Life is not always easy, especially modern life.  The more conveniences and automation we have, the more free time we have.  This makes it easier to sit around and get depressed.  An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.  Staying busy and working helps to overcome depression.  The best way to spend your time is with the Lord.  He desires our fellowship in prayer and communion.  Reading the Bible and good books will help you, as well.  Spend your time wisely in order to improve your sanctification. The Lord wants to grow you.

In the end, the Spirit of God is who needs to improve our countenance and our walk with the Lord.  Praising the Lord in song and speech will also help to improve our spirit and countenance.   We need to think about the blessings in our life more than the difficulties and trials.  We need to thank the Lord regularly for them. Every Christian has a pile of good and a pile of bad.  The Lord wants us to focus on the good; and the devil, on the bad.  The question is who are you going to listen to.  The Lord will help you to overcome depression if you let him.
