Judges 11:23 So now the Lord God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?
Dispossessed or Possessed
The children of Israel went through cycles of backsliding and getting right during the times of the judges and most of their existence. The church has done the same thing. We as Christians as go through cycles of backsliding and getting right. You are either dispossesing the heathen from their lands and conquering as a Christian or you are being possessed by the heathen and the things of this world. When you are driving a boat up a powerful river and you put the boat in neutral, you are still going to go down river. The motor has to be in gear and the propeller turning just to stay in one spot on the river, let alone moving forward with more power. We cannot just put our Christian life in neutral. We have to be actively conquering, actively possessing new ground in our Christian life.
Moving Forward
We need to be moving forward on the river of life. When the current is strong, we may not be making a lot of progress, but we are accomplishing something. We are maintaining good works. We are being a good testimony. We are doing what the Lord would have us to do. However, at some point, we need to have a little extra power in order to overcome the current of life and actually move forward and grow for the Lord. We need to possess new lands in our life. We need to overcome sinful habits and things that easily beset us. No matter whether we are maintaining or moving forward, it takes the power of the Holy Ghost. You need a spirit filled life in order to possess new ground the devil has taken.
