Luke 9:46-47 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
The Thought of the Heart
The Lord knew the thoughts of the heart of his own disciples. Surely he knows what we are truly thinking at any given moment. The point of this passage is that often, the underlying intentions of our heart are different than what comes out of our mouth. We often tend to be deceptive with others but also with ourselves. The Bible makes it clear that the heart is deceitful. We often cannot even know our own heart, let alone what someone else’s heart is truly thinking. We are quick to judge others intentions but quick to make excuses about our own.
Deceived Disciples
It is possible that the disciples likely thought they had good intentions in their conversation and did not even see the deceit setting in. The Lord is the only one who can perceive the thought of the heart. That is why it is so important to get in the Word of God regularly so the Lord has something he can work with. He needs to expose the deceit that lies in all our hearts. The Lord used an example of a child to deal with the deceit that was in the disciples hearts. It is going to take faith in the Lord to get rid of a deceitful heart. It Has to be a simple, humble, child-like faith in to overcome this deceit and admit it is even there. Are you going to let the Lord expose the thought of your heart? He needs to if you are going to have victory.
