The concept of working on your sanctification as a Christian on a daily basis is almost a lost art in today’s generation. The Puritans understood what this was in detail.
Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Vance Havner, when talking about farmers getting up early and not wasting time, said something to the effect of how can I sit around in bed when I am so far behind in my sanctification when the farmer is up and at his work so early. His point was you need to get to work on your devotions early and improving your relationship with God.
“Where is the man whose heart has not been broken, and whose spirit is not contrite, that according to the Word of God deals honestly with his own soul?” The Acceptable Sacrifice – The Excellency of a Broken Heart – John Bunyan
Working on Your Sanctification
The concept of working on your sanctification as a Christian on a daily basis is almost a lost art in today’s generation. The Puritans understood what this was in detail. You could tell it from their writings. You need to work out what God has put inside. This involves meditation and thinking about the standing of your soul as you walk with the Lord daily. Reading some of the Puritans and others that write along those lines would help you. I think this is especially true among young single people. They have a lot of time on their hands that could be spent working on their sanctification. You would make someone a lot better spouse if you had a real walk with God before you got married. I Corinthians 7 makes that pretty clear. When you are single you just have more time to devote to the Lord. Why not use the time and situation God has you in to your advantage and work on your sanctification more than the next post on your favorite social media site.
Dealing Honestly With Your Soul
If you are going to work on your sanctification, you are going to need to deal honestly with your soul. You need to get out the lamp of the Word of God and medititate and memorize it so it can begin to work on your heart. Light reveals things. It is very hard for us to find sin in our own lives. Why would someone look at someone else’s issues with a beam sticking out of their eye. Because we are often blind to sin in our own heart. Sometimes it takes a while for us to figure out the obvious because our hearts are so deceitful they will not allow us to see what is often obvious to those around us. Have a broken, contrite, humble heart is so important for the Chritian. If you are proud, it is going to be very hard for you to deal honestly with your soul. Instead you will just have excuses for your reactions to problems and situations in life. Working on your sanctification requires coming clean with God and dealing honestly with a broken heart of repentance. Often we do not get honest with God until we have been through a few trials and troubles. How are you coming along with working on your sanctification today?
