Judges 2:10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
Not Knowing the Lord
When all the generation of Joshua and those who wandered in the wilderness with them died, the next generation arose and took over. Sooner or later you are going to die and your children are going to be running things. The problem was the next generation grew up not knowing God. It did not say they did not go to church. They just did not know God. It is so important that the next generation learns to love God and live for Him. The best way they learn is by good examples in the church. It is not just the pastor that needs to live right. A good church is made up of good members. Moms and Dads have more influence on the next generation than the pastor. However, the next generation has to make a decision for themselves. They could have the best examples this side of heaven and still end up not knowing the Lord.
Not Knowing the Works
Not only did they not know the Lord, they did not know His works. This next generation had never seen a revival. Unlike their parents, they had not seen the Lord move mightily in battle and deliver. They had not seen new lands conquered and overtaken. It is so important that our children see the works of the Lord. It helps them to know the Lord better. We also need to brag on what the Lord has done in our life and remind our children of the blessings we have received. Even the Pharaohs in Egypt that arose after Joseph’s time forgot what happened in the famines and the deliverance from God. The result was the enslavement of God’s people. Our children need to know the Lord and His works if the Lord’s work is to continue. His blessings are tied to this.
