1 Kings 18:37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.
When Elisha was praying to the Lord before the altar, he asked the Lord to hear him. God wanted to reveal himself to to his people. The whole purpose of the calling down fire from heaven had one purpose, it was repentance. Repentance is a turning of the heart back again to God. The word “again” at the end of the verse tells us that it is something that has to happen more than once in the child of God’s life. If the only time you ever repented was when you got saved, you are not living a true Christian life. Repentance should be a way of life to the child of God. When we repent, the Lord is glorified and others will see. Just like Elisha wanted the Lord to reveal himself so that everyone would know He was God, He also wanted to produce repentance in His people.
The main thing about repentance is a turning. If something does not change, there is no repentance. If you are the same as the day you got saved, there is likely very little true repentance in your heart. The main thing affected by repentance is the heart. The Bible makes it clear the heart is deceitful. Repentance will reveal the heart. It will show it for what it really is, being wicked before the world and the Lord. Repentance will produce humility in the child of God. He will walk humbly and be less judgmental of others. He will look at others in a favorable light and look meanly on himself.
Where are you at with regards to the fire of God falling in your life? Has the Lord revealed himself to you like He did the children of Israel? If so, he should have produced a repentant spirit. If you never get right about anything, then you have not had an encounter with the Lord like this. The Lord wants to reveal himself in our life so that we turn from sin to Him. Turn back your heart to the Lord again. You need Him today.
