Proverbs 19:10. Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
DELIGHT, n. A high degree of pleasure, or satisfaction of mind; joy. – Webster’s 1828 Dictionary
Delight according to the 1828 Dictionary is a high degree of pleasure or satisfaction of mind. Delight and fools do not go together. The book of Proverbs has a lot to say about fools. One of the things mentioned here is that they do not tend to have a lot of joy in their lives. When you see people without a lot of joy of the Lord in their lives, you can probably guess they are a little on the foolish side. This verse says that someone who doesn’t have delight in his life, is even worse than a servant trying to pretend he is king. I would say the Lord wants the Christian to have delight in his life.
Delight is more than just joy. It is having a high degree of pleasure and satisfaction in the mind. It is not having pleasure in the things of this world. It is not being satisfied in the mind that you are great. No, rather it is satisfaction that you are saved and have Jesus Christ’s righteousness dwelling in this earthly vessel of a body. It is having pleasure in knowing that one day you will have a mansion in heaven. It is joy in the Lord and the power of his might to guide and direct in your life.
One thing about delight is that it occurs in the mind. If you don’t have right thoughts in your mind, it will soon come out in your actions. That is why it is important to not just read your Bible, but to meditate on it. Proverbs and Psalms are good books of the Bible to meditate or muse on. Maybe, in addition to your daily Bible reading, pick a Psalm or Proverb just to think about for the day. It might help your delight in the Lord to improve. God’s people are not to be fools. They are to have delight in Him. When you have the things of this world screaming in your ear, it is important to keep your focus on the important things of life. Always remember where the Lord brought you from and delight in that. You can be satisfied that your name is written in the Lamb’s book of Life. That can get you through today.
