1 Timothy 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
Do You Know How to Behave in Church
Do you know how to behave in church? You expect little children to not always behave in church. Who can forget the Patch the Pirate song about the Wiggle Worm? Sitting still is not always an easy thing to do. I don’t think that is what Paul was getting at here, though. I think he was talking about having right doctrine. He had just finished telling Timothy how to behave for three chapters. The Bible is the church constitution and rule manual for any true Bible-believing, Bible-practicing church. In his sense, he was letting Timothy know how to carry on business, even when he may get delayed. Paul trusted Timothy enough to take care of business while he was gone.
Our Behavior Affects the Church
God needs godly men to pastor a church. The pastor needs to realize that the church is not about him or numbers, but rather, about being a pillar and ground of truth in this world. Without the church, there is no truth being proclaimed in this age. Our behavior, as Christians in this world, affects the testimony of the church. If we live godly and are a good witness, we can affect the world. God’s house is an important place. It is not a place for some dead God, made with man’s hands. It is for the living God. A bunch of statues and icons do not make a church. The church has to stand on God’s word and that word preached. Do you know how to behave in church and out of church? It is important that the church remains the true pillar and ground of the truth. It is the only hope the world has.
