The Travail of Man

Ecclesiastes 3:10 – I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it. The travail of man can be seen in Solomon’s life.  The book of Ecclesiastes could also be called the Book of Frustrations.  You can tell as you read through the book that Solomon…

Fulness of Joy

Psalms 16:11 – Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. How shall we rest in God? By giving ourselves wholly to Him. If you give yourself by halves, you cannot find full rest; there will ever be a…

The Gray Beard

Proverbs 16:31 – The hoary head is a crown of glory, if it be found in the way of righteousness. 1 Timothy 5:1-2 – Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. The gray beard…

The Unholy Trinity of the Tongue

Proverbs 16:27-29 – An ungodly man diggeth up evil:and in his lips there is as a burning fire.  A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.  A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good. James 3:8 – But the tongue can no man tame;…

Making Yourself Poor

Proverbs 13:7-8 – There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.  The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke. Poverty and wealth are pretty interesting things.  In America you can make yourself rich.  You can work hard,…

A Thankful Heart

1 Thessalonians 5:18 – In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Our hearts are to be filled with thankfulness, and our lips with praise. Our attitude here is to be that of praising men. ‘In everything give thanks;’ thanks unto the Father; to Him who…

Don’t Be a Crank

Proverbs 17:20 – He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief. Proverbs 16:32 – He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. Don’t be a crank!  The Bible word…

God’s Currency Exchange

2 Corinthians 9:6 – But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. The question is “What do I reap if I sow?”  The normal carnal Christian mentality is if I sow carnal things I will reap carnal things.  But if you read…

No Cross

Matthew 16:24 – Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. There are some Christians to whom religion is a very easy thing. There is no cross in it; no self-denial; no bitterness; no toil; no conflict. And…

Constraining Love

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 – For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

It requires far more of the constraining love of Christ to love our cousins and neighbors as members of the heavenly family, than to feel the heart warm to our suffering brethren in Tuscany or Madeira. To love the whole Church is one thing; to love–that is, to delight in the graces and veil the defects–of the person who misunderstood me and opposed my plans yesterday, whose peculiar infirmities grate on my most sensitive feelings, or whose natural faults are precisely those from which my natural character most revolts, is quite another.  ELIZABETH CHARLES.

The Last Enemy

Romans 5:12 – Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 1 Corinthians 15:26 – The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. 1 Corinthians 15:55 – O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where…

Two Are Better Than One

Ecclesiastes 4:9 – Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. Ecclesiastes 4:12 – And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Two are better than one.  This is definitely true in any good marriage or any good friendship.…

The Smoking Flax

Isaiah 42:3 – A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. I wanted to continue the discussion we had yesterday regarding this verse and now look at the smoking flax.  The Common Flax or linseed is used for multiple purposes.  The seed can…
