Following your own spirit can get you into trouble like it did the false prophets in Ezekiel’s time. You need to do right and not what you feel, think or heart says is right. You need to follow God’s Spirit, God’s Word and God’s Man.
Ezekiel 13:3 Thus saith the Lord God; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!
Judges 17:6 In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
Proverbs 19:21 There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.
Do Right – Not What Feel is Right
You need to do right, not what you feel is right. Following your own spirit can get you into trouble like it did these false prophets in the book of Ezekiel. When you start to follow your own spirit as a child of God, you must override or ignore the Spirit of God inside you. You must also ignore God’s Word. We need authority in our lives. When we start to do what we “feel” is right, it is usually just the flesh. The flesh does not make right decisions. This is the reason the lost do such stupid things relative to the Word of God. They are just living according to the dictates of their own spirit.
Do Right – Not What You Think is Right
You need to do right, not what you think is right. Following your own spirit shows that you have seen nothing as the false prophets of Ezekiel. When you start saying what you think is right without reference to God’s Word, you show your own foolishness. When you say that the man of God is wrong when he preaches God’s Word or rebukes you for your sin, you are reacting from your own spirit. How many people leave good churches because they get mad at the man of God when he preaches the Word. It is because they follow their own spirit. Instead they go to churches where there are pastors just like these prophets in Ezekiel who will preach smooth things and try tell them they are okay when they are wicked as hell.
Do Right – Not What Your Heart Says
You need to do right, not what your hearts says. Your heart has a lot of devices or things in it that swirl around. It will put all kinds of thoughts into your head, many of them evil. It is not a wise thing to listen to a heart that is deceitful. Your own spirit can at times be influenced by your evil heart. We need to draw our strength from the Spirit of God that dwells inside us. God’s Spirit, His Word and God’s Man are the three things that will guide you in the counsel of the Lord. You want something that will stand up to God’s judgment. It may not always “feel” right, but it is right when you follow God’s statutes. Don’t follow your own spirit.
