Proverbs 17:9 – He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
Forgiveness in Friendship
Having forgiveness is important to maintaining a good friendship. Like this verse in Proverbs says, it is important that we cover, conceal, or hide a transgression that may be done against us by a friend. It is best to never make a big deal about it in the first place. If you don’t forgive, down the road it will become a point of contention and a root of bitterness. It will eventually destroy a friendship or a marriage.
Charity Covers it All
If you keep bringing up the same transgression with your friend, sooner or later it will kill the friendship. There will be a parting of ways. Sometimes it is best to let things die. You can’t fix everything in life. God understands you may be hurt but you need to go on. The only way to make that happen is to seek the love of God to kill the root of bitterness. That is seeking love. Charity will cover a multitude of sins, including the worst of them. This is probably one of the most important principles in a good marriage. If you are married, I hope your spouse is your best friend this side of heaven. If not, you need to get your priorities right.
Making Sure of Your Friendship
So make sure you still have a friend and don’t ever bring things back up after they are dealt with. Don’t let the sun go down upon your wrath. Deal with it and go on. Let love win out.
