Deuteronomy 29:4 Yet the Lord hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.
The Gift of Good Spiritual Eyes
The children of Israel wandered in the wilderness for many years. In all that time, they could not figure out the basics of the Christian life. The Lord had not given them a heart that could perceive the things of God. They did not have the gift of good spiritual eyes. It is just the grace of God that He opens to us an understanding of the Word of God and the things of God. Good spiritual eyesight is something we take for granted at times. Being in a good church with good preaching is like eating a lot of carrots. It strengthens your spiritual eyes. It helps to give you 20/20 spiritual vision. If you just talk to lost people for a little bit, you soon learn that they are spiritual blind. The problem is they have grown so used to being spiritual blind, they don’t even realize it. They like to bump and feel around with their cane of the world and they are perfectly content with that.
A Heart to Perceive
Having a heart that can perceive is a heart that can feel, see, or understand the things around it and then to be affected by what it sees and move on it. You can sit under good, hard preaching for year after year and yet not perceive what the man of God is saying. The children of Israel sat under Moses for 40 years and they ended up dying in the wilderness. That first generation never perceived what God was trying to tell them. The Lord never gave it to them. The reason he did not give it to them is because they did not want it. He would have gladly given them spiritual eyesight. When we reject the clear teaching of God, the Lord pulls back the gift of spiritual eyesight. Light rejected becomes lighting. We can’t pick and choose what we want to obey and believe from the Word of God. It is a package deal. Let’s not be like the children of Israel and reject the light of God. We need to keep our spiritual eyesight 20/20 and our focus on the Lord.
