A twelve-lesson verse-by-verse study of Romans chapters 1 through 7, the first half of the great epistle on justification by faith. The theme of the book is that a man is justified by faith alone — “the just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17) — and the course follows the argument from the condemnation of the heathen, the moralist, and the Jew, through the righteousness of God revealed without the law, to the believer’s death to sin and the conflict of the two natures.
Along the way the lessons take up the doctrines a believer must be able to state: propitiation, redemption, remission, and imputation; the four forms of the gospel; the two faiths of Romans 1:17; justification, reconciliation, and the atonement; federal headship; threefold sanctification; and the six spiritual laws in Romans. The course also answers Calvinism and Arminianism from the text, treats universal atonement as distinct from universal salvation, defends a universal offer against a limited one, and handles infant justification from Romans 4:15 and 5:13.

Coursework: Listen to each lecture and take detailed notes. The final exam is open-Bible and open-notes and covers Romans 1-7. One essay is required, on David and the blessedness of Psalm 32, worth 10 points. The remainder of Romans is covered in AD2015 Romans 2.
