God Needs to Break the Heart

God needs to break the heart if there is any chance we are going to live for Him.  The Word of God is the hammer that God uses to break the stony heart into pieces.

Psalms 51:17. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Jeremiah 23:29. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?

“The instrument with which the heart is broken, and with which the spirit is made contrite, is the Word.” – The Acceptable Sacrifice – The Excellency of a Broken Heart – John Bunyan

God Needs to Break the Heart

God needs to break the heart if there is any chance we are going to live for Him.  The Word of God is the hammer that God uses to break the stony heart into pieces.  God loves a broken spirit and a broken and contrite heart.  The humble Christian is the true Christian.  God hates pride and arogancy.  We need to get into the Word of God on a regular basis so it can hammer away at our heart and continue to chip away at it.  The heart continues to clog and build up “plaque” just like a real heart that is gets heart disease.  The plaque hardens and clogs the arteries and veins so that the blood cannot flow.  The doctor then needs to uses stents and ballons to go into the arteries to break up the hardened plaque and get the blood flowing again.  The Lord uses the Word to break up the plaque of sin and hardness in our heart so the blood of the spirit can flow in our veins again.  When things get clogged up in our hearts, we begin to have bitterness and contempt for others.  We have a sharp tongue.  We quit walking with God.

Fire and Hammers – God’s Plaque Removal Tools

The Lord needs to use fire and hammers to get the plaque of sin off of our heart.  Sometimes if something is real tough and hard, just hammering away at it will not break it.  You also need a lot of heat to begin to soften and melt it.  Sometimes the Lord needs to put some heat to us in order to soften our hearts.  A good trial and or a little bit of heat with a new trouble will do the trick.  If not, sometime the Lord needs to bring out the smelting furnace and put a lot of heat to us.  What little troubles will not accomplish, big trials can.  The heart is desperately wicked.  It needs to be hammered and fired regularly to keep it clean and humble.  Good preaching keeps the fire and hammers applied to the heart regularly.  Lots of Bible reading is good too.  Regularly get the plaque of sin off your heart.  The blood needs to flow freely.
