The Church That Cares For Your Soul

The Helmet of Salvation

Helmets are for protection of the head during battle.  The helmet of salvation is protection to the Christian in this life also.

Isaiah 59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.

Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

1 Thessalonians 5:8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.

Protection in Battle

The first helmets, made from leather, were used by the Assyrian’s in battle to protect the head from sword blows (Wikipedia).  The helmet of salvation is mentioned three times in the Bible.  This part of the armor of God is the first piece I would like to talk about in a multi-part series over the next few days.  I have chosen to go from top to bottom in this discussion.

The Head Controls the Body

Protection of the head is critical in battle.  The head is a vital part of the body.  The head contains the brain which is the master control of the entire body.  Direction comes from here.  The head is the only part of the body that has all five senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch).  It has all the input and output of the body.  I would say it is very important to protect this part of the body.

Salvation – Protection of the Head

This analogy of salvation being a helmet or protection for the head shows that the most critical part of a Christian’s makeup is salvation.  There is nothing more important that we need to protect or have than a helmet of salvation.  Just like the head controls everything going into and out of the body, salvation should control everything about us.  Salvation is our hope, our protection against everything this world can throw at us.  Salvation is the critical thing we need to protect.

Devil Attacks Mind

The devil is not stupid either.  If he was going to take a shot at us, the first thing he is aiming at is the head.  The devil attacks the thoughts and mind first.  If he can discourage a Christian in he mind, he has him.  Salvation is your main defense against attacks to fleshly lusts against the senses.  Hope in knowing you are going to heaven can battle evil thoughts to the head.  Salvation is your protection.  The devil wants you to think you are not saved when you are saved.  When you aren’t saved, he wants to convince you that you are.

Salvation is your protection against the mind and senses.  The devil does not want you having hope.  He wants you to quit.  Salvation is protection from hell first and foremost, but it is also protection to the mind in this life also.
