Choosing Your Words Wisely

Proverbs 17:27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

Choosing Your Words Wisely

Choosing your words wisely is important.  To explain something succinctly and with few words, and yet explain it completely takes wisdom.  It is often easy to babble on about something and get nowhere.  But to spare your words, think about what you are going to say, and then say it well, with as few as words as possible, shows great knowledge.  Also, how you say things is important.  An excellent spirit goes a long way when you speak.  Having a right heart and a right spirit when you address difficult issues shows understanding of the situation at hand.

Flying Off the Handle

It is easy to fly off the handle and not properly assess the situation before speaking.  When people do this, they often say the same thing over and over because they are in a rage and no one is really listening to them.  That is the opposite of sparing your words and using knowledge of the situation.  A wise man holds his tongue, thinks through the situation, and then speaks.  He truly tries to diffuse a tense situation with wise words.  That is not always possible when dealing with fools, but a wise man will know when he is dealing with a fool.  In that case, it is best to just walk away from the fool.

You Can’t Always Fix Things

As Christians, we need to spare our words and use knowledge in the situations that come across our paths.  We don’t always need to fix everything.  Some things just can’t be fixed!  That means, sometimes you should just be quite and not speak.  And if you do speak, you need to say what needs to be said and let it go.  We seem to think if we say our point over and over, this will help to convince someone.  If you have to keep saying it over and over, that likely means you are wrong, and so no one is going to be convinced, no matter what.  This is especially true of someone trying to defend a bad decision.  You need to keep your heart right, so you can think objectively, and let God speak to you.  God will use his word to show you.  Make sure you have a walk with God and he will give you an excellent spirit.  This will help you to choose your words wisely.
