Flying on Feelings Can Be Dangerous

Flying on feelings can be dangerous when you are going through clouds or poor visibility.  A situation called virtigo can set in.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

Flying on Feelings Can Be Dangerous

Flying on feelings can be dangerous when you are going through clouds or poor visibility.  A situation called virtigo can set in.  The little sensor in our inner ear that tells us when we are level can begin to drift (much like a modern gyro that sits in an iPhone).  We think we are level when we are not and begin to correct the airplanes attitude as a result.  As a result, a pilot may end up putting the plane on a crash course.  The only way a pilot can overcome this feeling is by ignoring it and relying on a good set of instruments that are tied to a very good gyro.  A gyro is a device that spins up very fast while the plane is sitting on level ground.  It tells the plane what is level throughout the whole flight. It maintains level at all times because it acquired level before getting in the air.  It got its reference before the storms and clouds come.

Getting Confused in the Heart

The same is true of our Christian life.  We can easily get confused by the feelings that God put inside us come from our heart.  Sometimes feelings can be tied to the circumstances and troubles we are going through.  Temptation and feelings can go hand in hand as well.  A feeling of heat or pain causes us to pull our hand away.  Feelings can be good if they are from the Lord.  Most of the time in good weather, a pilot can fly an airplane just fine using his inner ear and a pair of good eyes.  It is when bad weather comes that he needs the instruments.  A pilot learns to fly on instruments in good weather under a hood that he wears over his head when training.  We learn to trust the word of God in the good times.  We read our Bible and study it in the good times.  We go to church in the good times.  Now we are well trained to fly on the instruments when the bad times come.  You know how to fly without feelings and just trust God no matter what.  You know how to handle the problems of life using the instruments of the Bible.  Don’t ever let spiritual virtigo set in.  Get some training now in the good times and be ready to fly on the instruments of the word of God.
