Genesis 3:1. Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
Slight of Hand
The devil is subtil. He is not an “in your face” kind of person. He makes his move in a very cautious manner. The best illustration I can think of is a magician who uses “slight of hand” to deceive you. Most “magic” tricks are really just trying to get you to look at the wrong thing and get your focus off what is important. The moves are very slow and meaningful. Where a coin is at any given time is not what a magician wants you to know. He tries to do things to get you to forget what he really did with the coin and change your focus to his other hand. He is hiding the truth. He gets you to focus on where the rabbit is not, not where it is.
Deception and Doubt
The devil is the same way. He wants to get your focus off what is really important through some slight of hand. He did not do the direct front attack on Eve. He started with a simple question about God’s goodness. He put a seed of doubt in Eve’s mind that God was withholding something good from her in trying to keep her away from that tree. He is the great deceiver. We can’t let the devil fool us into thinking contrary to what God has told us through the Word. It is very important that you keep your eye on the truth because the pull of the world will cause you to miss the slight of hand that the devil will use.
The Devil’s Tactics
We need to always be on guard for the devil’s tactics. We know he uses fiery darts to attack. We know he tries to influence our heart and mind. We know he tries to change the Word of God. We know he moves slowly and in a calculated manner. We need to fight against the devil’s tactics. We need to outsmart him based on our knowledge of the Word of God. The Lord wants you to have the victory over the devil. That brings glory and honor to your Lord. Let God work in your life and give you the victory over the devil. Don’t let the devil use any slight of hand with you, and thereby deceive you.
